SMARTcube is a pocket-sized training device with six distinct textured surfaces, designed to stimulate sensory retraining and cortical remapping — helping the brain and hand relearn to communicate after stroke, nerve injury or hand surgery.

SMARTcube fits in a pocket or bag and is designed to be used little and often — at home, at a desk, or on the move — closing the long gaps that typically sit between therapy appointments.
Why texture
Touch is how the brain re-learns to feel.
When a hand is injured, the electrical pathways carrying sensory and motor signals to and from the brain are disrupted. Given the right stimulation, those pathways can rewire — a process known as cortical remapping. But it takes consistent, repeated input, and access to therapy is often limited by long waiting lists and long gaps between appointments.
Each face of the SMARTcube presents a different texture, engaging touch receptors in a different way and giving the brain varied, structured sensory information to work with.

Built by a surgeon who understands what hands need to do
I'm a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working full-time in London, specialising in the treatment of hand and wrist conditions. Much of my work involves caring for patients recovering from traumatic injuries or hand surgery. As a surgeon whose career depends on the precision and function of my own hands, I have a particular interest in helping patients regain strength, dexterity and confidence after injury.
In 2026, I was awarded a grant from the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) to develop SMARTcube, a device designed to support the recovery of muscle function, sensation and hand coordination following nerve injuries and other hand conditions.
